Taking on Australia's "DEAD COW GULLY"

In June 2025, I participated in the backyard ultra-style running race "DEAD COW GULLY" held in Australia.

Backyard Ultra is a survival race in which participants run 6.706km in an hour, resting and replenishing in the remaining time until the last person remains. The winner is the person who finishes the course in under an hour.

He completed his longest distance of 75 hours and over 500km , placing him in the top 10 among top competitors from around the world. Furthermore, this record has earned him the right to compete in the World Championships to be held in Tennessee, USA, in October 2025 .

The evolved Axio Lite supports long races

I chose the Axio Lite Tee as my main base layer this time.
TETON BROS.'s AXIO series uses a wool-polyester blend yarn developed in-house with a manufacturer (a TETON BROS. original material, different from the AXIO that is generally available), making it lightweight and comfortable to wear.
In particular, for the 2025 season, the material has been significantly updated, with improvements made to improve quick-drying properties and reduce pilling , making it the ideal base layer.

Below are some of the features of the Axio Lite that I experienced during an ultra-long-distance battle that lasted over 75 hours.

Temperature control performance that makes the most of temperature differences

During the race, Australia experienced a large temperature difference, with daytime temperatures exceeding 25°C and nighttime temperatures around 10°C.
However, I didn't feel the heat retention that is typical of wool, and even during the radiative cooling at night, I didn't get cold from sweat, and I felt a sense of security, as if my body was protected by another layer of skin .
I feel that it is also ideal for a 100-mile trail running race, where you run day and night on a course profile with large elevation changes and extreme temperature differences.

Quick-drying properties that defy conventional wisdom about wool

Improved materials allow for significantly faster drying times than previous models .
Even in temperatures around 25°C, I sweated profusely in direct sunlight, but the Axio Lite quickly wicked away sweat, minimizing the need to change clothes .
I'm confident that it will be comfortable to use in a wide range of seasons, except for Japan's hot and humid summers.

Long-lasting deodorizing effect

Wool's natural deodorizing properties are also worth mentioning.
Even after drying my sweaty clothes and putting them back on, there was almost no unpleasant odor, which significantly reduced stress during the race . I also had to change clothes less frequently than other runners .
The effect was evident even during a summer hike through the Japanese Alps, where comfort continued even after wearing the jacket day after day.
