There's a lot of wool out there these days but nothing like MOB. For ski touring in Montana, where it can be very cold, having a base-layer that can manage moisture is key.
If you've ever been to Montana, you know that the approaches can be really long, as the access is still very primitive. For big days where I might be climbing for hours before we're near skiable terrain, its very easy to sweat through a baselayer, especially with a heavy pack on. I used to always carry an extra shirt should I ever need to change during the day and ever since wearing MOB, I haven't needed to. After having used other brands wool baselayers, I thought they all performed OK, then I tried MOB – it's truly an amazing fabric.
Plus, in America, there is no apparel that sounds as cool as Master of Bishu.
While many wool products have appeared on the market in recent years, "MOB" is something special. When ski touring in Montana, where temperatures are extremely low, a base layer that can control moisture inside your clothing is important. If you've ever been to Montana, you know the approaches can be extremely long and require reliance on primitive means. On special occasions, you might need to hike long distances to the slopes.
Carrying gear under such conditions can easily lead to sweating. Previously, I would carry a spare base layer on day trips to the backcountry. However, since I started wearing "MOB WOOL," that has become unnecessary. I have worn merino wool base layers from many brands, and they have performed well. However, I feel that "MOB WOOL" is an even better material.
Furthermore, there are no cool products like "MOB (Master of Oshu)" in America.
